Biyaheng Manaoag

Ang Shrine of our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Manaog ay pormal na iprinoklama na Minor Basilica noong February 17, 2015 matapos ang proklamasyon ni Pope Francis sa Roma noong October 11, 2014.
(Minor basilicas are traditionally named because of their antiquity, dignity, historical value, architectural and artistic worth, and/or significance as centers of worship. At the same time a basilica must stand out as a center of active and pastoral liturgy.)

I recommend Dagupan Bus dahil may deretsong byahe sila patungong Manaoag.

·         Cubao – Manaoag – Cubao (two way) =  Php628 (air conditioned bus)

Shercon Adventure (CM Outing)

June 06, 2015 -  All are set for the anticipated team building/anniversary outing of CM FOH. This is my first time to join such event since I’m new in the company. Everything is ready – extra shirts and stuff, and my camera of course. I won’t let this event pass by without capturing every moment of it. When we arrived, the program is about to start, so we just take our breakfast, have some rest and the organizers brief us of what will going to happen for the whole day.
And, yes, the activities had started. Everyone’s stamina is high and all are excited. Games between different team had started and so far our team make it to finish the game in a shorter time than the other. However, all of a sudden, we almost give up on the last challenge. But as the saying goes, “Never give up”. We did manage the finish the challenge, though in a longer time so we fail to get the reward. Despite of that, we still enjoy the challenges. Here are some of the highlighted challenges:

Some points to consider during Marcos Regime

1.       One of the richest country second to Japan – undecided
As what the Marcos loyalists are always bragging, we are 2nd to Japan as the richest country in Asia. I tried to search for available articles or documents but as of today I can’t find anything to support the claim. If that would be the case, Philippines is a first world country by then. But there is no tangible evidence to  support this. Upon doing my research, I came to see this data; 1970-1980 Growth Rates of GDP per capita: Malaysia – 5.3% ; Thailand – 5.1%; Indonesia – 5.7%; Singapore – 7.7%; Philippines – 3.4%. If Philippines is second to Japan, why do we have the least increase in GDP. So if you can provide me any documents I can probably believe this.

2.       Philippines has the strongest currency exchange rate of $1=P2.  - True.
But let me remind you, it is not right to claim someone’s achievement. Before he was elected as President on 1965, peso-dollar exchange rate is already   $1=P2.  If you see the trend, the exchange rate becomes $1=P20 when he left the post, the most drastic drop of peso’s value in history. Here are the peso value per president at the end of term (before and after Marcos): Diosdado Macapagal – 1965 -$1=P3.80; Marcos – 1986 - $1=P20.53; Aquino – 1992 - $1 = P27.61.

3.       We had better economy during Marcos Regime – False.
Poverty significantly worsened during the Marcos years. “A World Bank study estimated that the proportion of people living below the poverty line in [Phl] cities had risen from 24 percent in 1974 to 40 percent in 1986 [the year Marcos was ousted]. The countryside was no better.” Thus wrote the well-respected journalist and historian Stanley Karnow in his book, In Our Image, America’s Empire in the Philippines, which won the Pulitzer Prize for History.
Economic growth slackened. Penn World Tables reported that while real growth in GDP per capita averaged 3.5 percent from 1951 to 1965, under the Marcos regime (1966 to 1986) annual average growth was only 1.4 percent (Wikipedia). So how could the Philippines have overtaken Singapore which had witnessed “unprecedented economic growth” averaging 12.7 percent of real GDP from 1965 to 1973, according to the Library of the US Congress? Thereafter, Singapore frequently reached growth rates averaging 8-10 percent. Homepage (Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1
Workers’ wages decreased drastically. Between 1982 and 1986, real wages of unskilled laborers in Metropolitan Manila declined annually at 5.8 percent, and those of skilled laborers at 5.2 percent. Agricultural wages also declined at the same rate, according to James K. Boyce, associate professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts in his book, The Political Economy of Growth and Impoverishment in the Marcos Era.

4.       Low price of commodities. – True; but because it was subsidized.
Basic commodities have been subsidized so that the public will be on the impression that they have a good quality of life. But if you dig deeper, the money that has been used to subsidize the services is from the loan from IMF and WB. In short, GINISA TAYO SA SARILI NATING MANTIKA.

5.       Martial was declared to stop insurgency/communism/activism – Half True – Half False.
Yes, there might be are insurgency at that time, but the question is, did the declaration of Martial Law solve the insurgency problem? The insurgency intensified. “. . . [T]he US foreign policy experts also perceived that the longer Marcos’ excesses continue, the faster the Communist insurgency would spread . . . So his profligacy, corruption and repression presented a potential danger to America’s strategic interests,” said Karnow. Not only did the Communist insurgency strengthen, the Muslim insurgency erupted and after protracted war forced the Marcos government to sign the humiliating Tripoli Agreement giving concessions to the Moro National Liberation Front.  - For me, It doesn’t solve the problem but rather intensify the problem and even cause life of thousands Filipino.

6.       Lot infrastructure project has been constructed. – True; but foreign debt also increases.
It is rightful the build lot of infrastructure since he is in the position for 21 years. With the sudden increase of our foreign debt, we then should expect that the money will be use for the public. The Philippines’ foreign debt rose from $360 million in 1962 to $28.3 billion in 1986, said Boyce. Hence, more than one-half of the present $53 billion external debt was contributed by Marcos. The government financed its spending primarily from foreign debt. From $2.9 billion in 1973, it rose to $6.8 billion in 1976 and $17.3 billion in 1980. The balance of payments also behaved generally well in the earlier years, with surpluses recorded from 1973 to 1974. However, an increasing trend of deficits followed the years afterwards.  From 1974 to 1976, investments were still very high as the government still engaged in massive spending. Spending on infrastructures was primarily the focus of the government, targeting an increase economic growth and tourism. Because of the large influx of investments from the public and private sector and the increase in economic activity, together with high domestic savings which financed part of government spending, the Philippines survived the first oil price shock, the Middle East oil embargo which started in 1973 and caused inflation to rise in the Philippines. By the years 1977-1980, the Marcoses primarily supported and focused on the expansion of its government-owned corporations, which were able to loan from foreign institutions for investments.  According to Joseph Lim of the University of the Philippines, a businessman in 1981 related to Marcos fled the country with $80 million worth of debt in international and local banks. Because of the gravity of the parties involved, the Central Bank, together with national banks like Philippine National Bank and Development Bank of the Philippines, formed a bailout package and rescued the banks and companies implicated, which paved way for “the expansion of the money supply from 1980 to 1983.”[3] The outflow of capital, termed “capital flight", contributed to the foreign exchange depletion as seen in Table 2 (qtd. in Boyle, 1990). "As the import liberalization program started to be implemented, important sectors … became more and more monopolized by the cronies of Marcos.”

7.       Di bale ng corrupt at least may nagawa. – Isang malaking kabobohan.

Now, you decide.

Discovering the beauty of Taal Volcano

I was asked by a friend to come with them for their short break at Tagaytay. As agreed upon, we will meet at one of the malls in Dasmarinas Cavite, April 22, 2014. But due to unexpected circumstances, they decided to just pick me up along the way. After almost an hour of waiting, they picked me up and finally get to the place at around 11:30AM.
Our initial plan is just to explore Tagaytay City. When we get off the bus, a man approached us and asked if we want to go to Taal Volcano through Talisay, Batangas. With so much excitement, we decided the visit Taal first and resume our Tagaytay adventure as planned when we came back from there. We took a tricycle ride from Tagaytay to Talisay for about 25 minutes. It’s a little farther than we expected. But the fully concrete road is good enough for the travel. Along the way is a relaxing view of Taal Lake and the volcano itself. A breath-taking view of deep ravines and the zigzag road will give you an experience of travelling to Baguio City (according to them, I haven’t been there yet).

Revisiting My Hometown

Part II
April 18, 2014 – Moriones Festival: I am Crucified, You are Saved!
9:00 AM. We’re ready for the Moriones Festival. We decided to move early to be able to catch up with the parade of Morions in the town of Mogpog. During this time, it’s not easy to get a jeepney or tricycle because everyone is busy for some church activities and we really have a hard time to get one. Luckily, a Good Samaritan passed by offering a ride with them. Unfortunately, the parade is done already and we are not able to watch it. We decided to just have some photos with the Morions roaming around the town. We also managed to visit the town’s church, San Isidro Labrador Parish Church, where we found busy local folks preparing for the late afternoon procession. After a while, we decide to look for a place to eat. We found one at the public market so we take our breakfast there. Right after, we decided to move to Boac, Marinduque’s capital town, hoping that we can watch the Via Crucis(Station of the Cross) – the re-enactment of Jesus Christ’s carrying of the cross and His crucifixion.

Luckily, the activity is just about to commence when we arrived the town. Everyone is in high spirit for the highly anticipated event. This is one of the highlights of the festival (the other one is the Pugutan – the beheading of Longhinos, a left-eye blind Roman Centurion who struck Jesus’ body with a spear and the blood from it make him see the world). The activity started at about 11:30 AM. Under the intense heat of the sun, the Via Crusis started roaming the town. Almost everyone is on the street to witness Jesus suffering for our salvation. The event ended up in Jesus Christ crucifixion along with the two sinners.

Revisiting my Home Town

Part I

Two weeks before the annual Moriones Festival in Marinduque, I was asked by my friends if they can come with me to witness the spectacular tradition of the Marinduquenos. Without any hesitation, I agreed believing that this is the time to showcase what my province got. Everyone is excited.

April 16, 2014 – All the Buses are packed.
We decided the rendezvous at Turbina Terminal, Calamba City at 2:00PM. Two of my friends need to attend to their job on that day but decided to go out early to avoid a heavy traffic and make it on time. Unfortunately, the 2:00PM call time became 5:00PM because of the crowd of passengers taking the opportunity of having a long vacation. All provincial buses are packed, so it’s hard to get one that can accommodate us. After several tries, we are lucky that we get one. Although we are standing, we are happy that we finally get the trip started. We leave the terminal at around 5:30PM. Along the street are groups of passenger waiting for buses. I wonder when will they reach their destinations if (even in the terminal), (the) buses can no longer accommodate the passengers?

On our way, some passengers get off the bus leaving empty seats where we can seat comfortably. We reached Dalahican Port at 9:15PM. We paid for our ticket and started boarding. The ships started its 3-hr course at around 9:45PM. The sea is calm making the travel more enjoyable. The moon is watching over our journey, lighting our way. The gently blowing wind gives us comfort.

Criticism and/or giving your point of view on a particular matter is not libelous at all. Kaya relax lang madlang people. Ano ba ang pinagkaiba pangkaraniwang libel case sa online libel aside from the gravity of sanction? Wala naman di ba?

Cyberworld is now a part of mass media and just like TV and prints na may nagre-regulate, maybe it's time na ma-regulate din ang internet.

1.       Ano nga ba ang Libel? Ayon sa umiiral na batas sa ilalim ng Revised Penal Code of the Philippines, Libel is defined as a public and malicious imputation of a crime, or a vice or defect, real or imaginary, or any act, omission, condition, status, or circumstances... so on and so forth.

4.       1987 Constitution, Article III Bill of Rights, Section 4 states that “No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances.”

Yung tipong  Me ma lang. (May masabi lang). Reality bites.

Based on the things that I pointed out, apparently, I’m in favor of this #CyberCrimeLaw. No one should be afraid of being charged as long as you know how to criticize the government constructively. This law can’t stop me to say what I feel as long as I am responsible for things that say. This is my opinion and I will stand for it.

Lucban Adventure!

It's been a long while when this one-day adventure happened. May 15, 2012 when we (me and my two friends) decided to witness the "Pahiyas Festival" of Lucban, Quezon.

Early in the morning, I prepare my self and decided to leave the dorm right after things has been set. Digital Camera, Tripod, extra shirts... all are ready. With so much excitement, I leave Lipa City and took a trip to Sto. Tomas, Batangas. From Sto. Tomas, I have to ride a bus up to Sariaya, Quezon for the rendezvous.

On the bus to Sariaya, my friend send me text message that they are already there waiting for me. Unfortunately, I was stock on a heavy traffic. They told me its because of the festival held at Sariaya. They don't have any choice but to wait for me since I don't know any alternative route. Ha! ha! ha!

In God's grace, I reached the meeting place 10:30 am. We ride a jeepney right after I arrived. With all the luck that we have, we ride a trip to Tayabas, Quezon. A trip directly to Lucban is not available. From Tayabas, we ride another jeep to Lucban.

Under the intense heat of the sun, we reached our destination past 11:00 am. The main road is almost full of other tourists and locals as well, celebrating these colorful festivity.

We decided to have our brunch (breakfast and lunch) in an old restaurant serving the most famous Pancit Lucban and longanisang lucban.

After the delicious meal, we decided to roam the area looking for an interesting subject of the place. Our tired feet brought us to the historical church of Lucban. The age of the church is so distinct though there are some modification done to preserve it.

Feeling exhausted, we look for a convenient store to buy some drink. Thanks God there is. Now that we are re-energized, we took our next destination, "Kamay ni Hesus Shrine". I have heard beautiful stories about it and I'm so excited to witness it with my eyes. We take some rest for a while inside the church within the area. The place is so calming and relaxing.

We explored the whole area after the short rest. The life size images of the biblical characters, the known Noah's Arc and so much more. The place is really beautiful. There is also place for the wishes, lighting candles of several colors depending on wish that you have.

Finally, we climb the top of the hill where the shrine has been erected. Passing the several hundreds of steps at last we're on top. It's so wonderful looking at the  base of the hill, seeing the colorful mainland, watching the sun slowly fading away through the clouds! So wonderful!

It's time to go back home. The problem is the transportation going back! We push our self on our jeep hanging at the back because there are no seats available. It's an adventure anyway. We agreed to drop by the resto along the way. "Kamayan sa Palaisdaan", it's one of the famous restaurant at place. We did our dinner as fast as we could to catch up the last trip to the city.

It was fun.. so much fun!! :)

An Open Letter for My Mother.

Dear Nanay,

All trough these years, you are always there for us, guding us to be the best that we can be. We are so blessed having you in our lives.

You're always there to pick me up when I'm down. You rejoice for my success. You simply gave me love and inspiration. I can't imagine my life (our life), without you.

I have witnessed your scarifices throughout my life and I thank God for having you as our mother. You're simply the best mom in the world. If I have given a chance to be born again, I'll choose you as my mother again. I'd rather have a life that we have before, than having a wealthy life with someone else.

I am not used of telling you how much I love you, but I really do. We do love you.

It's now our time to repay your sacrifices.

I love you Nay. We'll take care of you.

Love lots,

Billy

Ten tips to boost your self esteem!

Improve your self esteem! Here are some tips on how to grow your self esteem.

Acknowledge your strengths

We are all good at something or the other. Sit down and write about all the strengths you think you have. Do not over-analyse! Next, try to do things that bring out this quality into the open. This will help hone your strengths further, and also gain outside recognition. Also, do not forget to appreciate yourself for all your strong points and talents – it goes a long way in improving your self esteem.

Do not put up with crap!

Do not put up with people who are mean to you, even those who tell you they love you. Draw clear boundaries. Tell them you don’t like to be talked to that way. Ask them to talk to you nicely, and be assertive when you do so.

Lose those negative friends.

It’s time you lose friends who are constantly bitching or putting another down. Such people are likely to do the same behind your back, and they can leave you feeling critical and judgmental of others. Instead surround yourself with loving, positive people who are supportive and kind.

Take in compliments

Many have a difficulty in accepting compliments. There are numerous nice things people might say each day, which your mind wouldn’t have even registered. Many other times, people refuse to take a compliment saying something like “Oh, I didn’t do much.” or simply shrugging it off. From now on, when someone pays you compliment, breathe, accept it, and say thank you!
When you begin to do this, you’ll see your self esteem rise to new levels.

Do not berate yourself

Nobody achieves anything by berating oneself. You’ve made a mistake, OK – acknowledge it. There is no need to beat yourself up for it. Even the world’s greatest have made umpteen mistakes, and continue to make them. Give yourself permission for goof ups and even those BIG mistakes. This permission can be very liberating.

Accept yourself

Accept the good, bad and ugly sides to you, everybody has them. All of these aspects make you who you are. When there is complete acceptance of self, one experiences a feeling of centeredness within and that will naturally bring out a person brimming with self confidence and self esteem.
Here are some self acceptance exercises that experts suggest. The mirror exercise: Look really deep, and see the person that is you in the mirror with love. Experts warn that some people might find it hard to look at themselves in the mirror that way. Give it time, allow the feelings to swell up. Experience the grief, the pain and keep trying to look at yourself. Another suggestion is to start off with positive affirmations, as they are fairly easy. Keep telling yourself, “I accept myself just the way I am”. Positive affirmations are known to have a great effect.

Keep a gratitude diary

When you focus too much on all things going wrong, it can pull you down.
Every night, before you go to bed, write down 10 things you are thankful for. Many times one goes through without recognising all that’s going right. This exercise helps you focus on all the good things in your life. Making you feel worthy.

Respect yourself

Eat healthy and well, exercise, sleep well. When you respect yourself, you’ll notice how others too will begin to reflect that, lifting your spirits and your self esteem.

Dress smart!

Yes, clothes don’t maketh the man, but they do affect the way one feels about himself/herself. When you don’t look good, it affects the way you walk, sit and interact with people. So use this to your advantage and invest in looking good. This doesn’t mean you have to spend tonnes of money on grooming. Small things like bathing, washing your hair and wearing neat, pressed clothes can make a difference.

Smile

You have heard the phrase: “Smile and the whole world smiles with you, frown and you frown alone.” It’s amazing what a simple smile can do to enhance a person’s appearance. It has the power to alter the mood of a place you walk into. So carry your smile with you wherever you go.

Rare turtles returned to the Philippines!

Thirty-one live turtles, including some rare species, that were smuggled to Hong Kong were flown back to the Philippines on Friday but five others did not live to make the trip, an official said.
Three environment department workers arrived at Manila international airport carrying the turtles in a wooden crate more than two months after they were recovered from a Chinese smuggler in February, said Theresa Lim.

"The turtles are fine, active. Unfortunately, two of the pond turtles and three Asian box turtles died in Hong Kong due to stress," said Lim, director of the government wildlife bureau.
She said the turtles suffered stress when they were kept hidden as they were smuggled into Hong Kong.
The turtles, many slightly larger than the size of a matchbox, were cradled in pink foam-like material soaked in water in individual compartments inside the crate.
The animals, which include the critically-endangered Siebenrockiella leytensis pond turtle and the vulnerable Cuora amboinensis box turtle, will be taken to the western island of Palawan, Lim told AFP.
The Katala Foundation, a private wildlife protection group, will rehabilitate the animals for about three months before they are released back into the wild.
The Chinese smuggler was arrested at Hong Kong International Airport on February 8 after the turtles were seized from his luggage.
He was charged and fined HK$8,000 ($1,000) under local laws aimed at protecting endangered species.

There's no other place like Home!

Last March, I was invited as a guest speaker for the 33rd Commencement Exercises of my Alma Mater. I was hesitant to accept the invitation, yet in the end I was persuaded having in mind that this might be right time to give back for all the things that my Alma mater done to me.

Any way, as a preparation, I set my digital camera (DSLR actually) so that i can capture this special event. I decided to bought a new lens, Tamron AF70-300mm, far better than my 18-55mm lens. I know a lot of amazing things and scenes will come in my way home and I'm so excited for this.

To my excitement, I decided to leave my work early fearing that I might be left by the last trip of ferry. It might took a long time to travel to Dalahican Pier, considering the weather condition ( it has been raining for almost five days). With all the things packed, I set off to Dalahican riding a jeepney from Lipa to Sto. Tomas, Batangas. I ride the first bus to Dalahican that pass by. But when I pay the fare, the bus is bound to SM Lucena only. OMG. (I'll try to tell the whole story on my next blog).

To make the story short, I arrived at Dalahican port at exactly 8:30 in the evening yet I still manage to get the 10:30 trip. Though the weather is bad, I know this is worth my while. I feel something strange in my stomach, so I care to buy some food in the stall. I still have 2 hours to take some rest. I try to find some familiar faces but I found nothing.

The heaven keeps on pouring its tears and the wind  constantly blowing hard, literary, my way home will be hard. It's 2:30am when I reached Marinduque. The usually 2.5hrs trip take 4hrs. Thanks to the bad weather. Huh.

Finally, I'm home. I miss everything in this place, cool wind breeze, fresh air, peaceful ambiance, everything. I take a deep sleep and I know there's is a great day waiting ahead.

_______________

I was awaken by the ringing of my phone. I check the time.. it was 8:30 am and my friend is checking me if a got home safe. I get off the bed and the table is ready. This is one of the things I missed the most, a hot and delicious "tinolang manok" of my mother. I can't help my self eating a lot.

I started wandering around, trying to capture beautiful spots and strange things with my cam. But the rain is keep on trying to hinder so I just go back and try to capture the thing that my lens can reach.

And these are some of my it..

Later in the afternoon. I had a little conversation with my cousins, telling stories of how, what and why life is while drinking local wine called "tuba". I decided to get back home when the rain had a pause. It' s my chance.

I take my rest as we finish our dinner. Tomorrow is the day.

_______________

It was a long and peaceful sleep. I feel so comfortable. It's not hard waking up except my....hahaha.. The rain is still on, yet today's activity must go on. After the breakfast i started preparing for it. The program will start at 10 so I must be there early.

And the ceremony goes... It started well and it ends well...Congratulations graduates!

I had a little nice conversation with my former mentor after the program. It's really nice to be back and give thanks to all the people who contribute much for your success.

It's worthy. It is

Tips for a healthy heart!

A strong heart is a result of healthy lifestyle choices. Be active and stress-free

Today's fast-paced life and workplace pressures escalate stress levels, taking a toll on one's heart. Even youngsters are prone to heart ailments. It's very important to stay healthy and manage your stress levels by understanding the risk factors — high cholesterol levels, stressful lifestyle, smoking, and lack of exercise — following simple changes in lifestyle.

Here are some of the tips on how to sustain a healthy heart:

Avoid smoking.

Smoking reduces life expectancy by 15-25 years. If you are a smoker, you are twice more likely to have a heart attack than a non-smoker. The moment you stop smoking, the risk of heart attack begins to reduce.

Cut down on salt

Too much salt can cause high blood pressure, which increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease.

Watch your diet

Try to have a balanced diet. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, starch foods such as wholegrain bread and rice.

Monitor your alcohol

Too much alcohol can damage the heart muscle, increase blood pressure and also lead to weight gain. Avoid intake of alcohol or at least limit it to one to two units a day, gradually decreasing the consumption.

Get active

At least aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day. Keeping yourself fit not only benefits the heart but also improves mental health and well-being.

Monitor your BP, blood sugar and cholesterol levels

Routine medical check-ups will ring an alarm, if you need medical help.

Manage your waist

Cholesterol deposition in blood vessels begins in the first decade of life. Carrying a lot of extra weight as fat can greatly affect your health. Make small but healthy changes in your diet.

Manage your stress level

If you find things are getting on top of you, you may fail to eat properly, smoke and drink too much. This may increase your risk of a heart attack. Practice yoga/meditation. Take a vacation.

Check your family history

If a close relative is at risk of developing coronary heart disease from smoking, high BP, high cholesterol, lack of physical activity, obesity and diabetes, then you could be at risk too.

Laughter is the best therapy

Laughter anytime will work wonders for you. It is an instant way to unleash the pressure and it makes you feel light.
